Alexa supported voice control for SAP Systems

The initial project idea arose from the fact that the SAP consultant scc EDV-Beratung was interested in whether it was technically viable to link the two platforms SAP and Amazon Alexa. To test this, an SAP demo system had to be set up, which would be filled with demo data. Amazon Alexa would later be able to read this data with the help of simple http requests.

The SAP system had to be installed on a Linux-based virtual machine and connected to the SAP cloud using a cloud connector, where the created ODATA services were made accessible to Amazon Alexa.

In order to use Amazon Alexa, an Amazon Alexa Skill had to be designed and created. This then had to be synchronized with an AWS Lambda function to enable programming. In addition, a dashboard had to be created by means of a visualization in order to be able to use the data even if no Amazon Alexa is available.

It is possible to use Amazon Alexa to query the turnover rate, the sediment, the material range, the demand values, the material consumption values and the stock keepers of specific products. The http requests can either be processed by the SAP cloud or retrieved directly at the localhost via a VPN tunnel.

Through the graduation project, we were able to acquire new skills in the subject areas of SAP and Amazon Alexa programming.
